Why the Four Seasons Hotel Montreal Is the Perfect Home Base

There’s a long-standing belief that kids and luxury don’t mix—that there’s a category of hotels meant for “adults,” and a separate, clearly defined lane parents of young children are expected to stay in. And to be fair, some luxury properties absolutely reinforce that idea, whether through stiff service, side-eye glances, or the unspoken sense that children are merely being tolerated.

Our family has found Four Seasons properties to be the complete opposite of that, and Four Seasons Hotel Montreal was no exception. It feels like one of the best-kept secrets for families who still want a truly elevated experience.

Before we arrived, the team asked for our kids’ ages, and the thoughtfulness carried all the way through. As the girls rushed to the floor-to-ceiling windows to watch the city, they found perfectly sized miniature bathrobes and a magical teepee waiting for them. It was one of those moments that makes you realize how intentional the experience is. Not performative, just genuinely thoughtful.

Though If I had one minor note for a brand that otherwise gets everything right, it’s the lack of a signature plush mascot. Our girls are obsessed with their teddy bears from The Ritz London and the little sheep from The Goring London. Having a little branded friend to bring along on adventures and tuck into tiny bathrobes would have taken the wow factor to the next level and extended the experience after the trip.

For us, the luxury was in the silence of the logistics: a baby station meticulously set up and a crib already in place. Little conveniences like a diaper pail and sound machine. While the girls were busy playing, I found myself lingering on the sensory details like the weight of the linens and the signature scent of Byredo Gypsy Water (my favorite).

The Art of the Montreal Morning

While the hotel’s on-site dining at MARCUS is stunning, we loved using the hotel as a home base to explore the city’s iconic cafe culture. We spent mornings at Crew Collective & Café, where the soaring ceilings of the old Royal Bank building make even a quick latte feel like an event.

For a punch of color and nostalgia, we’d stop by Le Petit Dep. The girls loved the turquoise storefront almost as much as the treats inside. I have a lingering obsession with their maple latte, which is the quintessential taste of Quebec in a cup. When we wanted a brunch that felt truly “Montreal,” we headed to Dandy. It’s the kind of place where the vibe is effortlessly cool but the food is the real star; their ricotta pancakes with maple brown butter are a core memory now.

Standout restaurants

Montreal is a city of contrasts, and our food choices reflected that. One afternoon, we found ourselves at the Time Out Market, where the energy is infectious. The girls were happy, and we finally tracked down an incredible poke bowl from Le Blossom, which was fresh and colorful. They are known for their “torched” pressed sushi, so definitely worth a try as well.

You can’t visit Quebec without a poutine pilgrimage, and Maam Bolduc was our winner. It feels like a warm hug of a restaurant. It’s unpretentious, local, and serves what I’m convinced is the best poutine in the city. Watching the girls dive into a plate of fries and squeaky cheese curds after a day of walking was a highlight of our visit.

The Reset

The true test of a luxury stay is whether the parents actually get to relax. My husband surprised me with a massage at the Guerlain Spa, a sanctuary that deserves its own chapter. As the only Guerlain spa in Canada, it offers a level of customization you won’t find elsewhere. From the “olfactory journey” where I chose a signature scent for my treatment to the serene relaxation room, it was a beautifully-orchestrated reset.

Coming back to the hotel each evening felt like returning to a peaceful sanctuary. We all slept incredibly well, a feat that, as any parent knows, can make or break a trip.

The Verdict

The Four Seasons has mastered a rare balance: warmth over formality and thoughtfulness over flash. Real luxury is being made to feel completely at ease, welcomed without effort and cared for without judgment.
